Obituary for Anne Barbara Strauss (Shnirman)

Anne B. (Shnirman) Strauss died at Kaplan Family Hospice on Monday morning April 17, 2017. Born in Peabody on November 10, 1916, She was a graduate of Peabody High School 1933 and then attended Burdett College where she studied bookkeeping and then worked for Rooks in Lynn. In 1940 she married Daniel Strauss her husband of 64 years until his passing in 2004. In 1951 she and Danny opened “The Curtain Shop of Gloucester”. In an era when most married women stayed home, this remarkable women balanced her full time working with her responsibilities as wife and mother. In 1955, she and Danny opened a second store “Richard’s Curtain Shop” in Danvers. Although the venture was successful, soon after, Anne returned to working in Gloucester with Danny to ease the toll on family life. Together they made it one of the leading family owned home decorating companies, which continues today through a third generation. She and Danny moved to Marblehead in 1955 and after years of being snow-birds, settled in Lake Worth, FL. until she returned to Woodbridge in Peabody in 2013. Anne had been an active member of the Eastern Star, Hadassah Sisterhood of the former Temple Beth El and recently Temple Ner Tamid. An avid golfer until age 95, she had been a member of Kernwood Country Club, Salem and Fountain Country Club in Lake Worth. Anne was also a marvelous bridge player and played up to her passing. Anne was the beloved mother of Richard & his wife Debby Strauss and Michael Strauss. Cherished grandmother of Robert & his wife Lindsay Strauss and Jonathan & his wife Jennifer Strauss and Proud great grandmother of Dana Strauss and Samantha Strauss. She was also the dear sister of the late Aaron & his surviving wife Hilda Sherman, the late Lena & Max Bazer and the late Rose & Abraham Raffer. Services will be held at Temple Ner Tamid 368 Lowell St. Peabody on Wednesday April 19 at 1:00 PM. Interment at Maple Hill Cemetery Peabody. Following the interment, the family will return to Temple Ner Tamid until 5PM, then returning from 6:30-9PM a minyan will be held at 7PM. Condolence calls may also be made at the home of Richard & Debby Strauss on Thursday 1-4PM and 6:30-9PM with a minyan at 7PM also Friday 1-4PM. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
