For many years Bernie was a regular hiker on Mt Monadnock, depending on the day he would take different routes to get to the summit. But unlike most hikers, the hike was not about getting to the summit but going down a little way to a place that was called the seat, where he would meet with some of the other Monadnock regulars. Getting together with others was the important thing. While the discussions varied they were often about going on hiking trips. Bernie was a great organizer putting together various trips to National Parks, with the trips being all about hiking. Although I personally never went on any of his trips, he did come out and visit me with one of his groups in 2007 at Yellowstone National Park. He had a love of hiking and was known to assist in various rescues on Mt. Monadnock. Even after he could no longer hike Mt. Monadnock, he would still manage to gets some hikes in on Mt. Wachusett. The mountains have lost a true gentleman.
